Back Down Memory Lane the Natural Way
No matter what your age, the following frustrating scenes seem to replay for everyone like groundhog day: you can’t remember where you left your car keys, where your car is in the parking lot, or if you turned off the iron before you left home. And did you feed the cat today? And what’s your phone doing in the freezer, and the ice cream carton doing on the counter? Whew.
Those are minor annoyances (maybe not the phone in the freezer; that’s major), but what about if you get in a mental fog about serious things, like forgetting if or when you take medication, or important dates and deadlines? It’s pretty embarrassing when you thought your friend’s party was next Friday, instead of this Friday. You can live down the embarrassing forgetful moments, but it can get downright scary if you can’t remember if you took your medication for the day. Poor short-term memory negatively impacts health in that way. Yikes. It’s true memory-loss is a natural part of getting older, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t do anything to slow down the process.
Besides eating a low-fat, lean protein diet, and getting enough sleep, other things that help boost short-term and long-term memory are:
Meditation; it’s been proven to improve memory in as little as 2 weeks. I have found that taking a little CBD helps me stay focused. It quites my mind, which in makes it easier to meditation.
Coffee. Don’t get carried away with the caffeine, but a cup of coffee can help learning something new “stick” in your brain better than without.
Eat berries. Blueberries especially, are packed with flavonoids, and appear to strengthen the brain’s existing connections which play a role in long-term memories.
Chewing gum. Strange, I know. But studies have proven that chewing gum stimulates the brain’s hippocampus, which is the part of the brain where memories live. Be kind to your teeth, though, and opt for sugarless gum. There is even CBD gum!
Sleep. As I mentioned before, getting at least 7 hours of sleep is very crucial. Sleep-deprivation sabotages mood and memory in the worst way. Don’t forget to try CBD pills or drops.
Brain games. This is an oldie, but goodie. Crossword puzzles and other memory games keep your memory muscle sharp as a tack.
